You, Me, Things
You, Me, Things is a playable, sound-responsive installation that invites audiences to ‘feed’ a fantastical virtual world with sounds. Different sounds generate distinct digital lifeforms, the more that audiences interact the more dynamic the virtual ecosystem becomes. Developed by myself in collaboration with Uyen Nguyen and Matthew Riley, You, Me, Things is one of a series of works produced by our collective Yomeci Play.
You Me Things was commissioned by the Experimenta International Media Art Triennial for Experimenta Life Forms, and is currently touring Australia. It was first shown in an earlier form as Yomeciland at Bunjil Place.
Excerpts
How It Works
In You, Me, Things, the user is invited to make sounds with their body, the world of You, Me, Things listens and uses machine learning to determine what it is hearing, based upon these determinations creatures are spawned into the world. Each creature corresponds to a different class of sounds, and embodies heightened characterises of that sound. Each creature in turn makes its own sounds. As more and more creatures are born into the world of You, Me, Things a composition begins to emerge. As the creatures live and decay a lifecycle plays out and with it the composition shifts and changes through time.
